Finding the internship to launch your career
January 20th, 2011
If you’ve never considered looking for an internship, you should consider the possibility, even if you’ve recently graduated. While internships are often used to supplement college courses or earn credit, they are also useful for providing the sort of experience that “entry-level” jobs are hoping to see. Internships are also a good way to see if you would really be happy in a certain career. For this reason, it can even be helpful to get an internship doing something you hadn’t consideredyou may find your horizons widening.Looking for internships is similar to looking for jobs, but there are some different resources and some different details to look out for. The important thing is to start early in the year, since many companies may choose their candidates for the spring semester or the summer as early as November. If you are still in school, your college’s Internship Programs office should be happy to help you out. There are also a number of online resources devoted entirely to internships, so while you may be lucky enough to find one on a job listing site, we recommend checking Internships.com, MonsterCollege, and the like.Don’t be afraid to intern at the company of someone you know. Networking is an important part of looking for a job, so why not use it to your advantage in the internship arena as well? You’ll find during your search that some internships will be paid, while others will be only for credit. Others provide some sort of stipend, or housing if you have to travel. Make sure you know the logistics before accepting the internship, as backing out of one will look worse than not accepting in the first place. As mentioned above, recent graduates can use internships to gain experience for a permanent position. You can even contact the people in charge of hiring for certain positions to see if they would be interested in taking you on as an intern. This will allow you to gain experience while the company continues to search for a candidate. Of course, in the best case scenario, they will ask you to stay on in a full-time capacity.Make sure to keep your mind open when looking for internships, whether you’re a student or a graduate. You may find that your dream job is not as interesting as you think, or conversely, you may discover a new passionbut only if you’re open to the possibilities.
